Prospectus:

This prospectus is not “cast in stone”. It is intended as a guide, flexible enough to meet the needs and abilities of the individual student.

The course is structured so that students are not overwhelmed with theory during the early part, but acquire and employ techniques parallel to their practical & individual efforts.

Students who arrive on course with previous ability can “jump” ahead to any appropriate stage they wish.

Week 1.

Introduction to glass as a medium,

Basic glass working tools.

Measuring, marking and cutting glass.

Straight lines using guides and freehand.

Cutting circles using both a circle cutter and freehand. Cutting curves freehand.

Grozing, grinding and edgeworking.

Characteristics of float glass, tin bloom, “K” irridescence.

By the end of the session, have something ready for the kiln.

Week 2.

Transparent & opalescent glasses.

Introduction to kiln fusing & compatibility of glasses and materials.

Kiln wash, fibre papers.

Fusing techniques; Full fuse… Tack fuse…Dimensional & Textural fusing…Slumping & Draping…Combing… Casting.

Practising skills learnt in week 1.

Using various materials, create fusing project for the week.

Week3.

Using fibre papers to create texture.

Copper foiling and leading, techniques and tools.

Use of powders, frit, stringers, noodles & inclusions in fused glass.

Carry on with and/or create new projects.

Think about and discuss any ideas for “major” work.

Week 4.

Painting with enamels and stains.

Pate de Verre techniques.

Mould making… materials and techniques.

Development of student's projects

Week 5.

Adhesives for glass. Drilling & engraving.

Etching.

Pattern bars.

Student's projects.

Week 6.

Revision.

Student's projects.

Weeks 7 to 11

Students continue to work with guidance, on their own projects. The end result being that they will have some significant art work by the end of the course.
