Built of the local red sandstone, Byre Cottage is part of a barn conversion completed in late 1994. Set in the beautiful and peaceful Eden Valley but within easy reach of Penrith and the M6, (4 miles), it is the ideal base for exploring the Lake District (Ullswater 8 miles, and the Northern fells 20 minutes drive). The Pennines , Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish Borders are also very accessible. But 'on the doorstep' is the charm and tranquillity of the Vale of Eden - known as England 's 'Best Kept Secret'.

Langwathby literally means 'river crossing' and there was once a ford across the River Eden at this point. It is on the A686 which has been recognised as one of the twelve best drives in the world, travelling up and over the northern Pennines with magnificent views. The stone bridge which replaced the ford was swept away during a storm in 1968. The bailey bridge built as a 'temporary' replacement is still in use and is now recorded in the Guinness Book of Records!
